Portugal: Minho
A large area with granitic soil on the northwest Atlantic coast, the Minho region's Vinho Verde is one of the best-known DOC areas. Its white wines are light, fresh and lightly p��tillant, always drunk young (the meaning of verde - green - in this context) and well-matched to traditional seafood dishes; the reds are similar but rarely exported. Varieties, always blended, include Alvarinho (the best), Loureiro, Trajadura, Avesso, and Padern��.
